Australia is a country of migrants. Since the founding of the British colony in New South Wales in 1788 people from the United Kingdom, Ireland, continental Europe, and in more recent decades, Southeast Asia have moved here. This course is for Australians wanting to trace their ancestry to the immigrant and for non-Australians looking for their collateral relations "down under". The resources and methods presented will help those interested in earlier generations and those seeking living relatives. The course begins with the aspects of history and geography that are vital to genealogical research. Among the records covered are: birth, marriage and death, church registers, wills, passenger lists and convict records. Australia lacks comprehensive census records which means more time is spent on state records and on research methods, including practical help through case studies. The lessons include information about online records and resources in other formats such as microfilm.
